SWEETWATER, Tenn. – The Meigs County Tigers (3-0, 1-0) extended their winning streak against Sweetwater to 10 games with a dominant 35-3 victory over the Wildcats (1-3, 0-1) on Friday night.
Sweetwater won the opening coin toss and elected to defer to the second half but surprised the Tigers with an onside kick, recovering the ball at the Meigs County 47-yard line. However, the Wildcats' attempt to capitalize on the drive was denied when Nolan Dacus’ pass was intercepted and returned to the Sweetwater 37, setting up Meigs County in excellent field position.
The Tigers quickly took advantage, capping their first possession with a 2-yard touchdown run by Tuff Ricker. After the extra point, Meigs County led 7-0 with 7:16 remaining in the first quarter.
Sweetwater's defense kept the game within reach, forcing two turnovers in the final minutes of the first quarter. Zayvien Gary recovered a fumble, and Jaxson Powell intercepted a Ricker pass, giving the Wildcats some momentum. Sweetwater turned Powell’s interception into points early in the second quarter, as Bryce Teutimez nailed a 33-yard field goal to put the Wildcats on the board.
Meigs County responded quickly, extending their lead to 14-3 when Ricker connected with Bryson Hiefner for an 8-yard touchdown pass. The score remained the same at halftime.
Both teams traded punts in a scoreless third quarter, though Sweetwater's defense managed another takeaway with Trent Mizer recovering a fumble. But the Wildcats' offense failed to find its rhythm.
Meigs County blew the game open in the fourth quarter. The Tigers capped an 8-play, 95-yard drive with a 5-yard touchdown run by Hiefner, increasing their lead to 21-3 just seconds into the 4th quarter. Hiefner added two more touchdowns later in the quarter, one a 40-yard run and the other a 3-yard carry, sealing the 35-3 victory for Meigs County.
Sweetwater's defense forced three turnovers and held strong for three quarters but couldn’t contain the Tigers in the final frame. The Wildcats struggled offensively and failed to reach the end zone.
Sweetwater will look to bounce back on the road this Friday in a region matchup against McMinn Central (3-1, 1-0).
